Rockin' Rob & The Fabulous 4 MC Connection - The Original Mean Machine
Fraternity Music Group F-5406
This mega-rarity from the dawn of recorded rap finally gets the deluxe treatment it deserves from Fraternity Music Group. Recorded in 1981 with a dynamic group of vocalists (including female MC Lil' Bit and Crazy Eddie, Barry B and Lil' Rich) and a band that included future South Bronx stars Jimi Hazel (24-7 Spyz) on guitar and Rockin' Rob on drums, “The Original Mean Machine” is a quintessential example of the excitement and energy of those early days when rap was making the transition from live performance to wax. Predating the introduction of drum machines and samples, the band (with additional cowbell from Anthony “Pepper” Rivers) rocks a high-energy take on James Brown for the Fabulous 4 MC Connection to rhyme over, adding an essential extended drum break that will open the eyes of those who only know Rockin' Rob as one of the best b-boy DJs in New York City. The killer break is included on both mixdowns of the track, the main mix and the acapella “Dub Mix,” primed for creative DJ tricks. “The Original Mean Machine” has been rescued from the multi-track master tape where it languished unissued for years, and meticulously remastered by Rob, Hazel and the Undercover Brother. It is now available on a unique format befitting its singular status: a ten-inch, large-hole 45. This configuration, a first in the world of vinyl collectibles, is coupled with a full color, artistically weathered sleeve with archival photos and recording details.
